The range of useful books and other publications on furnace engineering, thermodynamics and process engineering is vast. The specialized practitioner, however, is obliged, generally with some degree of effort, to filter out the information and processes for heat treatment of specific materials that are relevant to his or her needs. The "Handbook of Aluminium Recycling", published exclusively in English, guides the practitioner in the field of production, design or plant engineering in detail through the various technologies involved in aluminium recycling. An examination of aluminium as a material and of its recovery from natural raw materials sources, in the context of a brief introduction, is followed by discussion of the various processes and procedures.Melting and casting plants, and also metal treatment facilities, are described in detail, as are provisions and equipment for environmental and workforce safety. A separate chapter is devoted to plant planning, operation and control, in view of the fact that the arrangement of the individual plant elements has a significant influence on cost efficiency and dependable operation. The technologies used for remelting of aluminium are analyzed both for their particular potential uses in conjunction with the scrap charged and with the attainment of the target alloy. The illustration of design details enables the practitioner to judge whether, and how, the technology examined in each case might be used for any particular application. Thermodynamics and metallurgical facts required for understanding of the relevant processes are drawn from practice. The reader is thus provided with a detailed overview of the technology of aluminium recycling, and familiarized quickly and systematically with both long proven and new, innovative methods.

This work, unique in its type, finally places at the disposal of those operating directly or indirectly in the diecasting sector a valid collection of specific technical literature in Italian. Whereas in international literature, the scientific aspects of the diecasting process are widely covered, the Italian bibliography on the subject is rather poor and fragmented and rather inadequate for providing a complete vision of the problems that arise in the process. I believe that the work, articulated into eight volumes – each one of which deals with a specific aspect of process problems – is also extremely useful for the technical training of staff. As diecasters know well, the success and quality of the pieces they produce depend on the design of the piece, the design and construction of the die, knowledge of the alloys used and of the available machines and equipment. Companies must therefore train their in-house staff directly and the “Quaderni delle leghe di alluminio” are a valid tool for achieving this goal. The subjects are handled directly and concisely, yet with rigour , and they are made easier to understand with the aid of numerous tables, diagrams and photographs inserted into the texts. Various examples and suggestions deriving from direct experience are also included, able to provide, confirm or probe concepts or notions regarding the process.. My wish for the authors, one of whom I know personally and esteem greatly as he worked by side for many years, is that their efforts may promote and stimulate a general level of qualification in the field of diecasting.

The Metallurgy of Anodizing Aluminum Connecting Science to Practice

In this book, the history of the concepts critical to the discovery and development of aluminum, its alloys and the anodizing process are reviewed to provide a foundation for the challenges, achievements, and understanding of the complex relationship between the aluminum alloy and the reactions that occur during anodic oxidation.  Empirical knowledge that has long sustained industrial anodizing is clarified by viewing the process as corrosion science, addressing each element of the anodizing circuit in terms of the Tafel Equation.  This innovative approach enables a new level of understanding and engineering control for the mechanisms that occur as the oxide nucleates and grows, developing its characteristic highly ordered structure, which impact the practical function of the anodic aluminum oxide.
