SURFACE COATINGS

by Mario Rizzo, Giuseppe Bruno, Anna Goransson Westerlund, Jari Vartiainen, Bulent Tepe, Kotohiro Nomura, R. Morent

The book presents current research on thin films and coatings. The mechanical properties of films and coatings, which are highly affected by their microstructure and their adhesion to substrates, are reviewed. Furthermore, electronic semiconductor devices and optical coatings, which are the main applications benefiting from thin film construction are looked at. This book discusses antimicrobial surface coatings as promising applications of advanced active food packaging systems. Ways in which they effectively control the microbial contamination of various foodstuffs are analysed. Research that has been done in the last decade using ultrasonic waves for coating surfaces is also examined. Finally, since coatings and films mechanical properties are highly affected by their microstructure, and their adhesion to substrates, this book includes research on interface microstructure and the important role that bond formation plays on coatings and films.

ALUMINUM: TECHNOLOGY, APPLICATION & ENVIRONMENT

This volume is the 6th edition of Dr. Dietrich Altenpohl's book, originally titled Aluminum From Within (and still carrying that subtitle.) It is the most recent English Edition, considerably updated and expanded beyond the German 5th Edition, from which most of it was translated. The newest alloys, such as the Al-Li group, and the most rapidly expanding applications in automotive frames and components, are well covered.

COLLECTION OF ALUMINIUM FROM BUILDINGS IN EUROPE

The high intrinsic value of aluminium is a major economic incentive for its recycling. Indeed, aluminium scrap can be repeatedly recycled without any loss of value or properties. Furthermore, the energy required is a mere fraction of that needed for primary production, often as little as 5%, yielding obvious ecological benefits. A study by Delft University of Technology revealed aluminium’s considerable recycling potential in the building sector. Aluminium collection rates from a cross-section of commercial and residential buildings in 6 European countries were found to be in excess of 92%, demonstrating the industry’s commitment to sustainable development.

The Study “Collection of Aluminium from Buildings in Europe” is available on website www.alueurope.eu.

ELECTROLYTIC IN PROCESS DRESSING (ELID) TECHNOLOGIES

 Fundamentals and Applications

by Hitoshi Ohmori, Ioan D. Marinescu, and Kazutoshi Katahira editors

A reference and application guide for an important precision finishing technology used in modern industry.

Edited by experts, one of whom developed the technology, Electrolytic In-Process Dressing (ELID) Technologies: Fundamentals and Applications provides an overview of ELID processes with correlations between the main parameters, describes ELID operations, and illustrates the concepts with case studies. The book’s authoritative coverage of major concepts and applications of this emerging technology makes it a definitive reference.

The book delineates the fundamentals, the chemistry and physics, and the hardware required by the process, then explores the application of ELID to different configurations of grinding. It discusses ELID grinding methods, lapping/grinding process, honing, and an original method of ELID grinding of free forms surfaces using an original design.

The book also provides case studies in areas such as:

  • Nano ultra-precision ELID and the latest developments in ELID nano-grinding
  • Glass ceramic mirrors, small lens, and large scale optics
  • New concept of micro-workshop, where all the machines tools and measurement devices are table-top machines with high accuracy
  • Successful applications of ELID technology in the optics, semiconductor, mold and die, and micro-tools industries
  • Surface modifications as a future method for obtaining complex modifications of surfaces by using ELID in combination with other methods

Arguably the first comprehensive review of this emerging technology, this book combines information drawn from experts and the literature to provide a practical reference for the field. The editors have put together a resource that anticipates many of the questions that will arise from the investigation of ELID methods and applications

Features

- Provides the first presentation of ELID fundamentals together with a large number of application

- Explains what ELID is (a new novel grinding technique) and the fundamentals

- Covers the historical development of the ELID process

- Defines how this process is found to bring about improvements in the surface characteristics of the workpiece being processed

- Includes chapters on ultra nanoprecision ELID grinding and desktop micro-ELID grinding

HANDBOOK OF LAPPING AND POLISHING

Editor: Ioan D. Marinescu, Eckart Uhlmann, Toshiro Doi

Lapping and polishing are currently the most precise surface finishing processes for mechanical and electronic components. Unfortunately, most improvements in either methods or understanding of the physical processes involved are closely guarded as proprietary information. The Handbook of Lapping and Polishing is the first source in English to bring to the light of day the physical fundamentals and advanced technologies at the leading edge of modern lapping and polishing practice.

Collecting decisive work contributed by industrial and academic experts from the USA, Germany, and Japan, this authoritative resource presents the latest lapping and polishing technologies along with case studies that illustrate their value. After a brief introduction, the book explains the fundamental concepts and major types of lapping and polishing processes. The discussion then turns to lapping of ductile and brittle materials followed by an in-depth look at lapping machines and equipment. Rounding out the presentation, the final chapters discuss polishing technologies and equipment as well as the latest on chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) and its applications in the semiconductor industry.

Offering an integrated approach to both theory and practical applications under a single cover, the Handbook of Lapping and Polishing supplies a definitive survey of the most advanced surface finishing technologies available.

Features

- Provides authoritative and reliable information on the latest developments in lapping and polishing theory and technology

- Examines lapping process mechanisms, subsurface damage, material removal, tool specification, modeling, and simulation

- Presents an extensive case study on lapping of brittle materials and another on CMP for semiconductors

- Outlines the major hardware used for lapping and polishing processes, emphasizing accuracy and intended application
